It did start failing on me (forward movement slowed) when testing, opened to investigate:
(See images attached)
1) cracked internal cluster bracket noted, no impact to function
2) bulb bracket noted as cracked (broken piece missing) and had been repaired with tape? (I don’t think it was factory) tape was replaced
3) drive pinion on motor noted as slipping on shaft. Would slide on shaft and disengage from adjacent gear at end of game, its 40 years old and the bore seems worn. I bonded the pinion to shaft with B7000 flexible adhesive to regain driving function. Can’t say for certain how long the repair would last.
Chose the adhesive repair as it is reversible.
It appears similar sized replacement pinions are available that would give proper press-fit on shaft, but I did not investigate this very deeply, it’s currently working.
Seems to be running fine now, my high score is 85
Have a video, but unable to share on Ebay.
Sold as is, again, it’s a 40 year old plastic electronic toy that didn’t come out of the box with great reliability.
Basic instructions:
Press Grey Button to reset odometer
Turn Key on
Select 1-4 speed with shifter lever
Steer to stay on road
Drive until fuel runs out
Turn Key Off
Put shifter back to N STOP
Repeat
The odometer is your “score”, which stops if you drive off the road.
KEY ON, the electric motor is running, I suspect being left running is what led to demise of most of these.
