Description
Offered in this listing is an extraordinarily rare, mint and fully restored, factory original, vintage 1949 Kamp Master teardrop trailer by King's Trailer Company of Torrance, California. (The Toyota FJ40 is shown for scale purposes only and NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING). With only a handful of these factory-crafted teardrop trailers remaining, the one offered in this listing is one of only a few that have been fully restored. It was taken down to the bare frame with the frame, all panels, cabinets, appliances, walls, roof, etc. fully restored, including new wiring, new waterproof tent fabric, and much more! Nothing was left untouched! In all probability, this will be your only opportunity to ever purchase one. Open the roof hatch and SURPRISE! It's like a giant live-in geode.Brilliantly conceived, the engineers/designers realized that if they lengthen a teardrop trailer slightly, raise it by inches, and move the rear hatch hinge forward several feet, a person just above 6 feet tall could stand up comfortably in it. Unlike standard teardrop trailers, Kamp Master removed the separating bulkhead allowing the forward sleeping area, kitchen, etc, to be in the interior space all together. No longer would campers have to leave the cramped forward sleeping cubicle, go outside, and lift the lid to expose the outdoor cooking cabinet. Furthermore, the sides of the trailer were located outside the wheels instead of inside to provide transverse sleeping accommodations for those slightly over 6 feet tall. This sitting/sleeping accommodation came in the form of a "Klik Klak" that is both a sofa and a small double bed with a simple hand adjustment lowering the sofa back. The result was a trailer in traveling mode that was 10'-9" long (plus the 2'-3" tongue), 6'-5" wide and 5'-1" tall (roof hatch closed). This teardrop design was absolute genius! And, it fits nicely in any garage.
The design of the interior includes the cooktop above a wood cabinet on one side and an ice box with a latched door and a sink with a folding metal top that drains in it on the other. Water is provided for by the original "Jerry" can with gravity flow when placed adjacent to the sink. The green sink drain hose can be seen on the exterior photo. Two additional upper cabinets are provided on the hatch above where kitchen utensils/plates/cups, which are included, are stored. Like a wood boat, there is no shortage of finely finished wood and polished stainless hardware. Openable copper-screened windows are located on each side. Wood cabinet and magazine rack storage are adjacent to the "Klik Klak" sofa/bed with sliding door storage above. Ample additional storage is provided under the "Klik Klak". Both Low voltage and 110V lighting are provided.
To provide a totally enclosed living space, as shown in the photos, the snap-on waterproof removeable tent with zippered windows is form fitted, although just loosely attached in the photo. The tent surround has an independent flap to allow use of the access door. The ingeniously designed copper-screened roof-hatch-supporting access door is hinged in the center and folds into the trailer when the roof hatch is down. The side door and roof hatch are lockable and keys are provided. As seen in the photo, the optional, large attachable matching waterproof tent awning and support poles are included as well as a table that cleverly mounts to the exterior of the trailer, shown temporarily placed on the vintage wood folding camp chairs.
With the original manufacturers specifications indicating the dry weight at around 840 lbs., it is not a heavy trailer and the FJ40 shown here pulls it up hills effortlessly. It was built very stoutly with a solid axle and leaf spring suspension (see photo). A removeable fabric debris shield keeps the aluminum skin on the trailer from being damaged by road debris from the tow vehicle. The trailer is fitted with lights and a trailer plug. The exterior mounted propane tank is located on the tongue. Rear stabilizing jacks are mounted at the rear. A spare wheel/tire and new jack are included. This teardrop is titled and currently registered with a vintage, year-correct California license plate and has a clear and clean California title. Finally, also included is an album (see photo) complete with the factory original sales brochure (see photo), course-of-restoration photos, and completion photos.
MINT condition! This Kamp Master teardrop trailer cost in the vicinity of ,000 to restore, not including the cost of the trailer. There are not only none better, there are none out there.
