    Description

Petite Antique Sterling Silver Tape Measure
    English * Circa 1830
This little solid sterling silver (tested) tape measure has wonderful details on the sides, top and bottom. It is embossed and chased around the sides with leafy floral designs & the top and bottom are in the form of flowers. It was made in England in the early-mid 19th century by Joseph Taylor of Birmingham and would have been part of a set. It was made before English silversmiths were required by law to hallmark and pay duty on small silver items.
The silver is in excellent condition with no dents or loss. The magenta silk tape is marked in inches and partial yards and is complete. The tape winds into the case by turning the knob and it works well. It measures 1" high and is 5/8" in diameter. Silver tapes like this are shown in the silver sewing sets on pp. 128-129 of Nerylla Taunton's book
    Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries.
