    Description

Ornate Antique Birds & Grape Vine Design Sheathed Sterling Silver Scissors
    English * Circa 1840
These wonderful sterling silver (tested) handled embroidery scissors and their sterling sheath were made
in England by Joseph Taylor of Birmingham.
English silversmiths didn't mark small items (and have to pay duty on them) until required to by law in the early 1880s. The scissors and sheath are decorated with all over repouseé embossing featuring grape vines and birds feasting on them.
The steel blades are tight with intact points and they cut well.
The silver on both the scissors and sheath is in excellent condition with no dents or splits. There may be a small repair (glue) at the bottom of one handle where it meets the blade. The scissors measure 3 5/8" long (4" in the sheath). They would probably have been part of a boxed set of tools or one of the Lady's Companions of the era. A couple of sets with sheathed scissors in this style
    by Taylor are shown
on pp. 128-129 of Nerylla Taunton's book
    Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries.
A very similar pair is shown on p. 109 of Gay Ann Rogers' book
An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools.
