Description

This is a rare Edwardian coronation coach novelty tape measure. It was made as a souvenir to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902.
The body of the tape measure is made of gilded brass with windows made of rose colored celluloid. Given its size, it is a remarkably detailed and accurate representation of the actual royal coach.* The carriage is suspended above four movable wheels. In front of the carriage are two footmen holding the Coat of Arms of Edward VII; and to the rear, the figure of Neptune holds a trident representing the British Empire's status as a naval power.
The tape measure itself pulls out from the side of the carriage. The tape is marked in inches on one side and centimeters on the other.  The tape winder is located on the top of the carriage, in the form of a crossed sword and mace; and it is in working condition.
The carriage is 3 inches long and 1 1/4 inches wide. It is 1 3/4 inches high. It is in very good antique condition. It has all of its original parts including the two footmen and the Neptune figure, moveable wheels, and a working winding tape. The celluloid windows are all intact except one side. The only other issue to note is some minor normal surface wear to the gilding due to its age.
*Note: The actual coronation coach on which this tape measure was based was originally made in 1760 for King George III. It has been used for all British coronations since; the last time being the 1952 coronation of Elizabeth II.
