    Description

Antique Palais Royal Mother of Pearl Flower Basket Scissors
    French * Circa 1820
This nice pair of mother of pearl scissors came from a fitted box of Palais Royal sewing tools. The shanks are carved in the form of flower baskets and the gilded ferrules are embossed with little stars or suns. They measure 3 3/4" long & slightly over 1 5/8" across the bows.
The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or loss though the handles are a bit canted. The steel blades are tight with intact points and they cut beautifully. The steel has no rust and is unusually bright and shiny. A variety of Palais Royal scissors are shown on p. 107 of Gay Ann Rogers' book
An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools
    .
The Palais Royal was an arcade of shops within a wing of a former royal palace in Paris. The shops opened in the late 1780s and housed the finest French artisans selling only the highest quality goods. Items of mother of pearl and precious metals were specialties there.
